If Richard Walters isn’t a name familiar to you already, then you’ve almost certainly come across his work as a songwriter and collaborator. Having written for artists including Gabrielle Aplin, Grace Lightman and Olafur Analds, Walters has also been busy with solo material, and released his outstanding fourth studio album A.M. late in 2016. Now the Oxfordian is back with single ‘Starlight’, which features a soundscape inspired by the likes of Sigur Ros, Bon Iver and M83. With haunting strings, tapered electronics and a ton of reverb, ‘Starlight’ feels as though it’s been lifted straight out of a soundtrack. It comes as no surprise to learn, therefore, that Walters’s cinematic tracks have been featured on TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Bones and Revenge. With a tumultuous year bookended by becoming a father and losing a close friend to cancer, Walters describes Starlight as “about that sense of nostalgia I felt at those two points, looking back but with one eye on the future.” -HM
